About this series
Folk dances are danced by whole communities at harvests, weddings and festivals, and anyone can join in. This series explains seven of them in short, simple stories for children aged 3 to 8: where each dance comes from, what the dancers wear, which drums and songs go with it, and when it is danced. Each episode has six short pages, one idea to take away, a question to talk about, and a colouring page to print or paint online.
Written for children from well-known public sources, including UNESCO’s lists of living heritage. Every region has many more folk dances than these seven, and each dance is danced a little differently in different places.
