Diwali is the festival of lights. Families light diyas, draw rangoli, wear new clothes and share sweets. Different parts of India remember different stories: Rama coming home to Ayodhya in the north, Krishna’s victory over Narakasura in the south, and Goddess Lakshmi bringing good fortune to every home. Diwali falls on Amavasya, the darkest night of the month — which is why every home fills with light. New to the festival? Read our Diwali for kids guide.
