Children’s Day for kids: why 14 November and what to do

A day made for you. Find out why India celebrates Children’s Day on 14 November, how people mark it, and make a paper wish chain at home or in class.

What is Children’s Day?

Every year on 14 November, India celebrates Children’s Day, also called बाल दिवस (Bal Diwas). It is a day to say that children matter: their questions, their ideas, their play and their right to learn and be safe. In 2026 it falls on a Saturday, so many families will have the whole day together.

It is a national observance for everyone, whatever their faith or region, so it is a good day to bring cousins, neighbours and classmates together.

Why 14 November?

The date is the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. He was known for his affection for children, who called him Chacha Nehru, or Uncle Nehru. After his death in 1964 the day was marked on his birthday. People remember different details of how the date was chosen, so we have kept to the part that is widely agreed.

The United Nations has a separate World Children’s Day on 20 November. If your child asks why there are two, you can explain that one is for the whole world and one is a day India has made its own.

How schools and families celebrate

In many schools, Children’s Day means a lighter day: games, songs, plays, quizzes, a fair or a small treat. In some schools, older students or teachers put on the show for the younger ones. At home, families often cook a favourite dish, go to a park or give children a small book.

Customs differ from school to school and from state to state, and not every school marks it in the same way. Whatever you do, the idea is simple: put the child at the centre of the day.

Try it at home: the five-minute wish chain

You need a few strips of paper, a pencil and some tape or string. Ask each child to write or draw one wish for their school or neighbourhood, for example “a bigger library” or “more trees in our lane”. Younger children can say their wish aloud while a grown-up writes it. Loop each strip into a ring and link the rings into one long chain, then hang it on a wall or window.

Read the wishes together and pick one small thing the family can really do this month, such as planting a sapling, giving away outgrown books or inviting a neighbour for tea. A wish becomes stronger when someone acts on it.

For a classroom, let each row add its own rings, then ask each group to explain one wish to the others in one minute. It practises speaking, listening and kindness together.
