Bedtime stories for 2 year olds: five tiny tales

Two-year-olds love short sentences, sounds and words that come back again and again. Here are five tiny bedtime stories we wrote at Rangooo. Each has a soft ending, a cosy takeaway and a little point-and-say prompt. Nothing in them is scary. Read slowly and stop whenever your child is sleepy.

Five tiny bedtime stories

1. The sleepy duck

Duck is on the pond. Quack, quack. The water is still. Duck is sleepy. Yawn, yawn.

Duck yawns a big yawn. Quack, quack. Duck tucks in one wing. Quack, quack.

A little breeze blows. Shh, shh. The pond ripples. Shh, shh.

Duck tucks in the other wing. Quack, quack. Duck puts her beak on her chest. Quack.

The pond is dark. The pond is quiet. Duck is fast asleep. Goodnight, Duck.

Cosy takeaway: When we are sleepy, we tuck in and rest.

Point and say: Point to the duck and say, "Quack!"

2. Goodnight, moon

Up in the sky, there is a moon. Round, round moon.

"Goodnight, tree," says the moon. The tree is still. "Goodnight, bird," says the moon. The bird is asleep.

"Goodnight, house," says the moon. The house is quiet. "Goodnight, window," says the moon. The window is dark.

"Goodnight, little one," says the moon. Soft, soft light. Round, round moon.

Little one closes both eyes. Sleepy, sleepy eyes. Goodnight, moon.

Cosy takeaway: The moon says goodnight to everyone.

Point and say: Point to the moon and say, "Goodnight, moon."

3. The little boat

A little boat sits on the water. Rock, rock, rock. Rock, rock, rock.

The water goes splish. The water goes splash. Then the water goes shhh.

The little boat rocks slowly. Rock, rock, rock. The little boat rocks slower. Rock... rock... rock.

A star shines on the sail. Twinkle, twinkle. The boat is warm. The boat is calm.

Rock... rock... The little boat stops. The little boat sleeps. Goodnight, little boat.

Cosy takeaway: A slow rock is a lovely way to rest.

Point and say: Point to the boat and say, "Rock, rock, rock."

4. Blanket the bear

Bear has a blanket. A soft, soft blanket. Bear pats the blanket. Pat, pat, pat.

Bear pulls the blanket up to his toes. Snug, snug, snug. Bear pulls the blanket up to his tummy. Snug, snug, snug.

Bear pulls the blanket up to his nose. Snug, snug, snug. Only his ears peek out. Two round ears.

Bear breathes in. Hmmm. Bear breathes out. Hmmm.

Soft blanket. Warm bear. Bear is asleep. Snore, snore, snore. Goodnight, Bear.

Cosy takeaway: A snug blanket makes a warm bed.

Point and say: Point to your own blanket and say, "Snug, snug."

5. The quiet rain

Listen. The rain is here. Drip, drop. Drip, drop.

Rain taps on the roof. Tap, tap, tap. Rain taps on the window. Tap, tap, tap.

A frog sits under a leaf. Ribbit. The frog is dry. The frog is happy.

The rain gets softer. Drip... drop. The rain gets quieter. Drip... drop.

Then the rain is a whisper. Shhh. Everyone is cosy inside. Cosy, cosy, cosy. Goodnight, rain.

Cosy takeaway: Soft rain sings us to sleep.

Point and say: Tap your fingers on your knee and say, "Drip, drop."

Reading with toddlers: a note for parents

Many families find that a calm, predictable ending to the day helps little ones settle. There is no single right way, so take what suits your home. These are everyday ideas, not medical advice.

Choosing board books and picture books

Sturdy board books with thick pages are easy for small hands to hold and turn. Look for clear, simple pictures, only a few words on each page, and rhythm or repetition that is fun to say aloud. Books about animals, bedtime and familiar sounds often hold a toddler's attention. A library is a lovely place to try books before you buy.

Questions

How long should a bedtime story for a 2 year old be?

Very short is fine. The five stories here take about a minute each when read slowly. Let your child's interest guide you, and stop when they seem sleepy.

Is it fine to read the same story every night?

Yes. Many toddlers love a favourite again and again, and knowing what comes next can feel comforting.

What if my child will not sit still for a story?

That is common at this age. Let them wander, point or turn pages, and read a few lines at a time. Try again another evening.

Are these stories original?

Yes. All five were written for Rangooo and are not retellings of any existing story or character.

These stories and tips are our own writing for Rangooo and are general suggestions only, not medical advice.
